Fake App’s: In today’s digital payment landscape, UPI has simplified transactions, but it has also opened the door for cyber criminals who are now using fake UPI apps to scam people. Cybersecurity experts have raised alarms about fraudsters creating exact replicas of popular UPI applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. As digital payments gain popularity, scammers are continuously evolving their tactics. If you’re a shopkeeper, business owner, or just a regular UPI user, it’s crucial to verify payments before completing any transaction. Stay alert and don’t get caught up in the deception of counterfeit UPI apps.

How do these counterfeit UPI apps operate?

Scammers are targeting shopkeepers and small businesses with these fake apps. They mimic legitimate apps and provide false payment confirmations. In some instances, sound boxes in stores will announce that a payment has been received, even though no money has actually been transferred. These fraudulent apps are being distributed via Telegram and other online channels, which heightens the risk.

Fake payment process:

1. Scammers enter the shop pretending to be customers.

2. They make bogus payments using the counterfeit apps.

3. The app displays a successful payment, and the soundbox announces ‘Payment received.’

4. The shopkeeper, believing the transaction is legitimate, hands over the goods, but no money has been sent.

How to protect yourself from this cyber fraud:

– Always verify payments by checking your bank account or using the official UPI app.

– Don’t depend solely on soundbox notifications.

– Only download UPI apps from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

– Be wary of customers using unfamiliar or new payment applications.

– If you encounter fraud, report it immediately to Cyber Helpline 1930 or file a complaint at your local police station.
