A passport is a crucial document for international travel. You cannot travel abroad without it. Normally, we require a physical passport; however, India has recently introduced the e-Passport facility, a more advanced and secure version of the existing passport. The Ministry of External Affairs launched it as a pilot project on April 1, 2024.
Currently, this facility is available only at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs). However, there are significant plans to expand it nationwide in the future. The e-Passport incorporates digital technology and a high-level security system, significantly reducing the possibility of fraud and counterfeit passports. Let’s understand the key features of an e-Passport and how to apply for one in detail.

What is an e-Passport and how does it work
Many people may be wondering what an e-Passport is. Will there be no need to carry a passport anymore? Will it be a PDF version of the passport, like the e-PAN? It’s not. The e-passport is a digital and secure passport equipped with an RFID chip (Radio Frequency Identification Chip) and an antenna. This chip securely stores the passport holder’s biometric information, such as fingerprints, facial photos, and iris scans.
The chip also stores personal information such as name, date of birth, and passport number. A golden symbol is engraved on the cover to identify this passport. Most importantly, the Indian e-passport is designed according to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, making it recognized even abroad.
The tremendous benefits of the e-passport
The e-passport offers numerous benefits to travellers, revolutionizing the travel experience.
Faster and Easier Immigration
