Fine Imposed on Toll Operators
The Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has imposed heavy fines on toll operators in about 250 cases due to incorrect or excess toll deductions from people’s accounts. These toll operators have been fined ₹1,00,000 per violation for making the wrong or excess deductions.
70% Reduction in Wrong Deductions
After the imposition of these fines, there has been a 70% reduction in the cases of incorrect toll deductions. It has also come to light that around 30 crore transactions occur through FASTag in India every month, with about 50 complaints received each month regarding these transactions.
Reasons for Excess Toll Deductions
Here are some common reasons why excess toll tax may be deducted:
- Double Deduction: Sometimes, the toll tax is deducted twice for the same journey from the vehicle’s account.
- Wrong Vehicle Identification: Due to system glitches, a wrong vehicle may be identified, leading to toll deductions for a vehicle that did not even pass through the toll plaza.
- Incorrect Entry by Toll Workers: At times, toll operators make errors, and even if the vehicle doesn’t pass through the toll plaza, money is still deducted.
- Excessive Toll Charges: Sometimes, toll operators charge more than the fixed fee for the route or vehicle category.
How to Get a Refund
If the wrong toll money is deducted from your FASTag account, you must immediately register a complaint. Once the complaint is filed, IHMCL will investigate the matter. If the toll tax deduction is found to be wrong during the verification process, customers will be refunded promptly.
In such cases, the toll operator responsible for the error will be fined ₹1,00,000 to discourage further mistakes.
