Delayed Income Tax Refunds: Know the Reasons and How to Check Status

Income Tax Return: Even after filing income tax returns (ITR), many people do not get timely refunds. These are the people, according to whose returns the refund is made.

At the same time, the department says that refunds are being given on time, but if for some reason you are getting delayed, then you can check the status by visiting the department’s portal or can also mail.

Reasons for delay in refund

There can be many reasons for not getting a refund even after submitting an income tax return, such as:

Verification of return by Income Tax Department: The department checks whether you have given your income and property information correctly or not. This process may take some time.

Error in bank account information: If you have given the wrong bank account information while filing the return, then there will be a delay in issuing the refund.

PAN card and Aadhaar card not linked: If your PAN card is not linked to Aadhaar, then there may be a delay in refund.

Not doing e-verification: If you have not done e-verification after filing the return, then also the refund will not come.

How to check the status of the refund

You can check your refund status by visiting the e-portal of the Income Tax Department (https://eportal.incometax.gov.in).

For this, you have to log in by entering your user ID and password. After logging in, go to the “Service” section and click on the “Know Your Refund Status” option.

Then select Assessment Year 2023-24 and click on the “Submit” button. This will allow you to see the status of your refund.

How to complain about a delay in refund

If you feel that your refund is getting delayed, then you can register your complaint on the Income Tax Department’s e-mail ID (orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in). While complaining, do write your PAN card number and mobile number.

Apart from this, you can also contact the department’s helpline numbers (18001030025, 18004190025, 8046122000, 8061464700). These helpline numbers are active from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm.

Remember Important Things

Submit the return on time and give the correct information.

Link your PAN card to your Aadhaar card.

After filing the return, do its e-verification.

Fill the bank account details carefully.
