We often overlook minor mistakes in government documents, but when it comes to Aadhaar card, even a small mistake can become a big problem. If you are thinking that changing your name or correcting your surname in Aadhaar card is as easy as it used to be, then you need to update yourself. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has tightened the rules and now just an affidavit will not be enough for any major change. For this, you may have to go through the lengthy process of Gazette Notification.
Have the rules changed for the common man?
The question that arises in the minds of the public is whether the rules have actually changed. The answer is yes. The process of changing name in Aadhaar card has been made more secure and formal. Earlier, a letter from the local councillor or a simple notarised affidavit was enough, now if you make significant changes to your name (like changing your full name or adding/removing surname), then UIDAI may require a Gazette Notification issued by the central government. These strict rules are in place to prevent identity fraud and ensure the authenticity of documents.

Gazette Notification: is it mandatory for everyone?
The biggest question is, does everyone have to go through this process? If there is a minor spelling correction to your name, you may not need it. However, if you are changing your name completely, or changing your surname after marriage, and you do not have any solid evidence, then a Gazette Notification is required.

Under this process, you first have to prepare an affidavit. Next, you have to advertise your name change in two newspapers (one in English and one in the local language). Finally, all these documents, photographs and application forms have to be sent to the Publications Department of the Government of India. Once your new name is published in the official gazette, it becomes legally valid.
What are the disadvantages of not following the rules?
If one does not follow this procedure, the result will be outright rejection of the application. Suppose you apply for name change at the Aadhaar centre but do not attach a copy of the gazette, then your request may be rejected. The impact is not limited to Aadhaar alone. If Aadhaar is not updated, your PAN card will not be linked, there will be mismatch in names in bank accounts, and even getting a passport will be a hassle. It may also become difficult to avail government schemes due to discrepancies in government records.

Will you get help from the Delhi headquarters?
Many people feel that if things do not work out locally, they should contact the Delhi headquarters. The Publications Department under the Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for publishing the Gazette. Once your name is published in the Gazette, it is valid all over India. It cannot be cancelled by UIDAI or any other agency. Therefore, it is wise to follow the right procedure. After getting a copy of the Gazette, you can easily make changes in your Aadhaar, PAN and all other documents.
