Bread Price Increase: While the average person is still trying to cope with the rising costs of petrol and diesel, inflation has hit hard again. Breakfast is getting pricier. Yes, we’re referring to bread. Many folks kick off their day with bread, pav, and sandwiches, but now the price of bread has gone up in Mumbai. All varieties of bread have seen a Rs 5 hike. Reports indicate that several major companies have rolled out these new bread prices starting May 16th.
What’s the reason behind this?
There are a few key factors contributing to this sudden and unprecedented surge in bread prices. As per the report, the primary culprit is the increasing cost of plastic powder, which is the raw material for bread packaging. India heavily relies on imports for this plastic powder, and the recent drop in the Indian rupee’s value in the global market is making it quite costly to import raw materials. Additionally, the recent hikes in petrol and diesel prices have led to higher freight charges. The rising transportation costs and the increased prices of preservatives used in bread have significantly raised expenses for bread manufacturers, which are now being passed on to consumers.

2. Whole Wheat Bread Half – Rs 55 Aata – Rs 60
3. Multigrain Bread Half – Rs 60 Aata – Rs 65
4. Small Brown Loaf Half – Rs 28 Half – Rs 30
5. White Loaf Half – Rs 20 Half – Rs 22
6. Brown Bread Half – Rs 45 Half – Rs 50
What will be the impact of the bread price hike?
In Mumbai, the price of bread has jumped significantly by Rs 5 per loaf. Bread is now the top-selling item in Mumbai. Working individuals, office-goers, laborers, and students, in particular, consume vada pav, misal pav, bhaji pav, and sandwiches almost every day. As a result, not only will these prices rise, but the costs of all bread-based meals will also go up. This price increase will directly affect the daily budgets of regular citizens.
Price increases of up to Rs 5 per loaf have also been implemented on varieties like sandwich bread, whole wheat, and multigrain bread. In some areas, the price of brown bread has increased from Rs 45 to Rs 50.
Bakers are worried
According to bakery owners, factors such as plastic packaging costs, transportation costs, rising prices of imported raw materials, and the weakening rupee have led to a significant increase in production costs. Furthermore, the recent increase in milk prices has further pressured food prices. Every day, millions of people in Mumbai eat vada pav and other bread-based dishes. As a result, customers are expressing concern that the increased bread prices will further burden the average Mumbaikar.
