In response to the rising air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the government has tightened its belt and now has tightened the rules regarding Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. If your vehicle’s pollution certificate has expired, you could be in big trouble. Not only will you have trouble getting fuel at petrol pumps, but traffic police can also impose a hefty fine of up to ₹10,000.

Most alarmingly, e-challans are now being issued automatically through high-tech cameras installed at many locations. To avoid this unintentional mistake, it’s wise to check your vehicle’s status promptly. In this article, we’ll show you the easiest and most accurate way to check your vehicle’s PUC online from home.

What is a PUC Certificate

The PUC certificate is solid proof that the smoke and gases emitted from your vehicle are within government-set environmental standards. For Delhi, which is grappling with pollution, it’s not just a piece of paper, but a collective responsibility to keep the air clean.

Driving without a valid PUC not only harms the environment but also ruins your driving record. The government has now made it mandatory for insurance renewal. This means that if you don’t have a PUC, your vehicle insurance won’t be renewed. Typically, it’s valid for one year for new vehicles and six months for older vehicles.

How to check PUC status online from home

If you’ve forgotten when your vehicle’s pollution certificate expires, there’s no need to panic. Just follow the steps below:

First, open the official Parivahan Sewa website https://puc.parivahan.gov.in/ on your mobile or laptop.

On the homepage, you’ll see a prominent tab for ‘PUC Certificate’. Click on it.

Now, enter your vehicle’s registration number (e.g., DL01XXXX).

Enter the last five digits of the vehicle’s chassis number from your RC.

Carefully enter the security code (Captcha) displayed on the screen.

Clicking on the PUC Details button will bring up the vehicle’s complete status.

Here, you’ll see how long your certificate is valid, the last reading, and the option to download it.

Escape from digital surveillance is now impossible

In Delhi and surrounding areas, smart cameras, along with the traffic police, are now monitoring PUCs. As soon as your vehicle passes a toll or major intersection, the camera scans your number plate and immediately matches it with the database. If the PUC is found to be expired, an e-challan message is instantly sent to your registered mobile number. This fine of ₹10,000 can be a huge loss.

Furthermore, PUC machines and data servers are now linked at many petrol pumps. Filling petrol or CNG without a valid pollution certificate is going to become even more difficult in the coming days. The government’s strict stance is clear that vehicles causing pollution will not be allowed to run on the roads.
