Aadhaar for Kids Update: Many parents think that getting an Aadhaar card for a young child is a cumbersome task, involving fingerprints, eye scans, and long lines. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deliberately simplified the Aadhaar process for children under 5 years of age to minimize stress for parents. With the right information, you can complete the process in a very short time and without any hassle.
Baal Aadhaar is linked to the parents’ Aadhaar.
The Aadhaar card issued for children under 5 years of age is called ‘Baal Aadhaar’, which is blue in color. At this age, the child’s biometrics (fingerprints or iris) are not yet developed, so their biometric information is not captured. Instead, the child’s identity is linked to the Aadhaar number of the parent or legal guardian. At the time of registration, one parent must have an Aadhaar card, and the child’s Aadhaar is linked to that card.

Required Documents
Parents are often confused about the documents required, but the UIDAI has made this very clear. Two key requirements are required for child registration: the child’s identity and proof of their relationship to the parents. A birth certificate is a mandatory document for children born after October 1, 2023. Additionally, the parents’ Aadhaar card serves as proof of address and identity. Before visiting the enrollment center, ensure you have the original birth certificate to avoid any technical issues in the future.
What Happens at the Enrollment Center
It’s most convenient to visit an enrollment center located at a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra or post office with your child. The operator enters the child’s basic information into the system, and a photo is taken on the spot. Neither fingerprints nor a mobile number is required during this process. The biggest relief is that getting a new Aadhaar card for children under 5 years of age is completely free, and you don’t need to pay any fees.
Biometric updates are mandatory at the ages of 5 and 15

The most important step after getting a child’s Aadhaar card is when the child turns 5. According to the rules, updating the child’s biometrics (photo, fingerprint, and iris scan) for the first time is mandatory upon reaching the age of 5. The same process is repeated at the age of 15. The good news is that the Aadhaar number remains the same despite the update, and this mandatory update is completely free if done within the stipulated timeframe.
Benefits of Getting an Aadhaar Card on Time
Nowadays, Aadhaar has become a necessary document for everything from school admission to availing government schemes and healthcare services. Therefore, getting your child’s Aadhaar card issued shortly after birth is a wise decision. If you get Aadhaar made on time and keep updating its biometrics at the prescribed age, then you will not face any obstacles in future processes like making a passport or opening a bank account.
