No one will sleep hungry in Delhi now
The Delhi Government is launching an unprecedented initiative to strengthen the availability of affordable and quality food in the capital. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, under the Atal Canteen Scheme, nutritious and filling meals will be provided to the needy for just ₹5. The government’s primary goal in launching these canteens is to ensure that low-income laborers, rickshaw pullers, working people, and others in need have easy access to affordable and good food during the day.

Launch Date and Target
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that the Atal Canteen Scheme will be launched on December 25th, the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Through this scheme, a full meal will be provided to those in need for only ₹5. The Chief Minister recently inspected the construction site of the Atal Canteen in the Haiderpur area and reviewed the preparations.
In the first phase, the Delhi government will launch Atal Canteens at 100 locations across Delhi simultaneously. Canteens have already been operational in several assembly constituencies, such as Shalimar Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Rohini, Patel Nagar, Badarpur, and Karawal Nagar. Each canteen will serve meals twice a day, with 500 plates available at each location. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta firmly stated that the Delhi government’s goal is to ensure that no one in Delhi goes to sleep hungry.
What will be included in the food at the Atal Canteens?
According to the Delhi government, the food platter available at the Atal Canteens will be designed with nutrition in mind. The platter will include basic yet nutritious items such as dal-rice, vegetables, and roti. Most importantly, hygiene and quality will be strictly monitored to ensure safe and fresh food.
Regular sample testing will be conducted by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories to ensure food quality. The kitchens will use modern equipment, LPG-based cooking facilities, industrial RO water, and cold storage facilities. All agencies associated with the Atal Canteens will be required to submit food safety licenses, employee health certificates, and monthly reports.

Which segment will benefit the most?
This scheme is expected to benefit a large segment of daily wage earners in Delhi. This canteen is considered a major relief for laborers, sanitation workers, rickshaw pullers, organized sector employees, and low-income groups. Providing food at such low prices will help low-income groups save some money on their daily expenses, improving their standard of living.
