Know what the Aadhaar Act 2016 says
According to the law, an Aadhaar card is only proof of identity and address; it is valid only for citizenship. Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act 2016 clearly states that an Aadhaar number or its proof does not give any person the right to citizenship or residence. This means that having an Aadhaar card does not prove that any person is a citizen of the country. A bench of 5 judges of the Supreme Court also said in the Putraswamy case of 2018 that Aadhaar is not valid for citizenship. Recently, the court has reiterated the matter that Aadhaar cannot be accepted as proof of citizenship. Especially for registering the name in the voter list of Bihar.
How will citizenship be proved?
To prove citizenship in the country, some special documents are required, such as a passport, a birth certificate, or a residence certificate. All these documents clearly confirm the citizenship of a person in the country. But all documents like Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, or ration card are considered proof of citizenship, the reason for this is that these are necessary for address, along with identity.
