UIDAI has updated the list of documents required for getting an Aadhaar card. If you want to apply for a new Aadhaar card or make any changes to it, first check which documents you need to carry. UIDAI has issued new instructions about the documents needed for Aadhaar-related work. These updates are for the assessment year 2025–26 and apply to both Aadhaar enrollment and updates.

Who Must Follow These New Rules?

UIDAI has made new rules for the Aadhaar card. These rules are for Indian citizens, Indians living in other countries (OCI card holders), children above 5 years of age, and people staying in India on a long-term visa (LTV). If you want to get a new Aadhaar card or make changes in your Aadhaar, you should know which documents are now required.

Which Documents Are Allowed?

The Indian passport is the most useful document. It can be used as proof of identity, address, relationship, and date of birth.

Other Documents You Can Use

Other documents like PAN card, voter ID, ration card, driving license, bank passbook, pension card, and any certificate given by the government can also be used. But which document is needed depends on what you are updating in your Aadhaar.

One Person Can Have Only One Aadhaar

UIDAI has clearly said that only one Aadhaar card will be valid for one person. If someone has two or more Aadhaar numbers by mistake, then only the first one will be valid. All other Aadhaar numbers will be cancelled.

Rules for OCI Card Holders and Foreign Nationals

For OCI cardholders and foreign nationals, UIDAI has set different rules. They must submit documents like a foreign passport, visa, citizenship certificate, or a residence permit from FRRO if they want to apply for Aadhaar or make any changes.

Want to Change Name, Gender, or Date of Birth?

If you want to change your name, gender, or date of birth on your Aadhaar card, you need to submit a self-declaration with other documents.

  • For name change: Gazette notification
  • For gender change: Medical certificate
  • For date of birth change: Birth certificate
