Biometric in Aadhaar Card: Aadhaar cards are issued to Indian citizens by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). We need Aadhaar cards for many government and non-government purposes, including getting a SIM card, opening a bank account, completing KYC, verifying our identity, and many other such tasks.

The Aadhaar card contains the cardholder’s biometric and demographic information. If you wish, you can update this information. Especially if your child is over 15 years old, you need to update their Aadhaar card’s biometrics. If you haven’t already, you can do it now, and most importantly, it’s free. You can learn more about this in the next slides…

Why do biometric updates have to be done?

According to UIDAI regulations, iris scans and fingerprints are not taken for children under 5 years of age. When a child turns 5, their biometrics are updated. However, when a child turns 15, they are required to update their biometrics again. UIDAI guidelines state that children’s biometrics are fully developed by the age of 15. Therefore, they must update their iris scan, photo, and fingerprints again.

Children can get their biometrics updated between the ages of 15 and 17. Failure to do so could result in problems with Aadhaar-related services. Therefore, ensure this is done promptly.

You can get updates for free

Children previously had to pay a fee of Rs 125 for biometric updates, but the UIDAI has waived this fee and made it free. Effective October 1, 2025, children can have their biometrics, iris, and photo updated for free until September 30, 2026.

This is how you can get your biometric updated

  1. If you also need to update the biometrics of your child who is 15 years of age or older, then you will have to visit your nearest Aadhaar centre by making an appointment.
  2. Here you have to get the token and first get the Aadhaar verification done.
  3. You will then be called to a counter when your turn arrives, where your child’s biometrics, iris, and photo are updated.
