8th Pay Commission: 25% KMA Hike for Railway Employees, kNOW

8th Pay Commission: Big news for railway workers. The first day of Navratri brought great news for railway workers. The Finance Ministry has sanctioned a 25% rise in kilometer allowance (KMA) for the millions of running staff in the railway sector.

This decision will have a direct effect on the salaries of loco pilots (Loco Pilot Allowance Increase), guards, and other running personnel. It comes at a time when employees nationwide are facing increased expectations regarding the Eighth Pay Commission.

AIRF termed it a ‘major victory’

Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF), referred to it as a significant victory, stating, “This approval is the outcome of a long-standing demand and persistent efforts.” He mentioned that this matter was prominently discussed in recent meetings with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and officials from the Finance Ministry, after which the government displayed a favorable attitude.

What is KMA and why does it matter?

KMA, or kilometer allowance, is given to employees who operate trains or are on running duty. Since these employees are constantly traveling, they do not receive the standard daily allowance (TA/DA). To make up for this, they are compensated per kilometer.

Moreover, there is a “minimum guarantee.” This ensures that even if an employee travels less on a particular day, they are still compensated for a minimum number of kilometers (like 120 or 160 km). This KMA (Running Staff Allowance Hike) represents a crucial part of their earnings.

Shiv Gopal Mishra told media that, Employees are expected to receive the increased kilometer allowance starting in April. He further explained that when dearness allowance reaches 50% (Railway DA 50% Allowance Hike), the rules require revisions to several allowances. Now, the government has approved a 25% increase in the KMA based on this, which is being considered a major signal for employees ahead of the Eighth Pay Commission. Shiv Gopal Mishra also posted about this on the social media platform X and expressed his happiness.

How much can be the benefit in salary?

A 25% increase in KMA will directly impact monthly income, but it’s not certain that every employee will receive the same benefit. This will depend on the number of kilometers a worker works per month. Simply put, employees whose KMA was previously Rs 10,000 could now see it increase to around Rs 12,500. This means additional benefits of thousands of rupees per month are possible.
