For the last few days, a message about the 500 rupee note is going viral on the social media platform WhatsApp. In this message, it has been claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will stop issuing 500 rupee notes after a few months. This viral message has created confusion among the people. Let us know what is the truth of this claim.
What is the truth behind the viral message?
According to the fact check of Press Information Bureau, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement regarding the 500 rupee note. The fact check further said that this WhatsApp message is being made viral to create confusion. No information has been given by the officials regarding this nor has the Reserve Bank of India issued any circular. In such a situation, this claim is false.
PIB said in a social media post, ‘RBI has not issued any such instructions. The validity of 500 rupee note will remain. In such a situation, do not pay attention to wrong information. Before trusting any news, definitely verify the source of sharing it.’
RBI had issued this circular
In fact, for the convenience of the people, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had instructed all white label ATM operators to increase the number of 100 and 200 notes in their ATM machines, so that people can easily get small notes. RBI said in a circular, ‘In an effort to increase people’s access to frequently used notes of different values, it has been decided that all banks and white label ATM operators (WLAO) will ensure that their ATMs dispense 100 and 200 rupee notes on a regular basis.’
The RBI circular further said that from 30 September 2025, 75 percent of all ATMs will have Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes. At the same time, this number will be increased to 90 percent by 31 March 2026.
