This news is a huge blessing for customers seeking a powerful and feature-rich scooter for daily use. Yamaha has updated its popular scooter series with cutting-edge technology and introduced the 2026 Yamaha NMax 155 Tech Max to the international market with a new YECVT gearbox. Most strikingly, this scooter now features a downshift button, a feature typically found only on motorcycles.
Equipped with a 155cc liquid-cooled 4V engine, a TFT digital console, and exceptional features, this scooter will completely transform the riding experience. Let’s learn more about this revolutionary technology and this amazing scooter from Yamaha.
What is the YECVT Gearbox

Yamaha’s new YECVT (Yamaha Enhanced Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox is significantly different from traditional CVTs and makes riding more enjoyable. The highlight of this special gearbox is the dedicated downshift toggle button on the left switchgear. Pressing it instantly switches the scooter to Sport mode, increasing engine revs, giving the rider the feeling of downshifting on a motorcycle. The NMax 155 offers two driving modes: Town and Sport. Sport mode offers more power and sharper response, excellent for overtaking, while Town mode is designed for a comfortable ride and improved fuel economy.
How the New System Works
In traditional CVT scooters, gear ratios vary continuously, meaning there are no fixed gears. However, Yamaha’s new system incorporates a hydraulic mechanism with electronic transmission control. This mechanism allows the belt drive to be locked into two different ratios. This unique technology gives the rider a fixed-gear experience. This makes downshifting or braking a better and more effective experience.
Engine and Features

The 2026 Yamaha NMax 155 Tech Max is significantly advanced in terms of performance and technology. Powered by the same 155cc liquid-cooled 4V engine that also powers the Aerox 155. This liquid cooling technology prevents the engine from overheating even during long rides. For safety, both front and rear disc brakes are provided. The scooter features a 4.2-inch TFT digital instrument console that displays key information, including Bluetooth connectivity.
When will it launch in India
Yamaha introduced the NMax 155 in India in February 2024 and released a teaser in September. Market experts predict that the company may officially launch it at its upcoming event on November 11th. However, it’s not yet clear whether the India-bound variant will feature the new YECVT downshift feature. Indian customers may have to wait a little longer for this cutting-edge technology.
