Hatchback Cars: Hatchbacks have consistently enjoyed a commanding presence in the Indian car market, and this May, Maruti Suzuki Swift reinforced its heritage yet again. Outdoing all its competitors in its segment, Swift became the best-selling hatchback in May 2025, reiterating its status as the darling of Indian consumers even with a year-on-year decline in sales.
Maruti Swift Tops May Sales
Maruti Suzuki Swift registered a total sale of 14,135 units in May 2025. Although this was a 27% drop compared to May 2024’s 19,393 units, it still retained the top spot in the hatchback sales chart. Available at a range of Rs.6.49 lakh to Rs.9.64 lakh (ex-showroom), Swift’s combination of affordability, performance, and trust in the brand saw it move ahead of others.
WagonR and Baleno Trail Swift
At the second spot, Maruti WagonR also sold 13,949 units. Although it saw a 4% decline year-on-year, its value-for-money positioning and tall-boy design couldn’t deter buyers from making a purchase. At the third position, Maruti Baleno dipped by a whopping 10%, selling 11,618 units. With new-age features and an increased appeal, Baleno still couldn’t surpass Swift this time.
Tata Tiago Rises to Fourth
The Tata Tiago impressed with a positive sales trajectory. It sold 6,407 units in May 2025, marking an 8% increase over the same month last year. Its rising popularity points to consumer trust in Tata’s safety-first design and consistent performance.
Sales Drop for Alto and Grand i10 NIOS
Maruti Alto, a former favorite in Indian homes, recorded a 35% drop and fell to fifth place with 4,970 units. Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS recorded an 18% dip with 4,344 units sold to take seventh place. The steep decline indicates the struggle these models are having with newer, feature-loaded competitors.
Toyota Glanza and Hyundai i20 Struggle
Toyota Glanza moved up moderately with 4,753 units sold—a 5% rise over last year. Hyundai i20, though, couldn’t match the pace, with a 21% dip resulting in only 4,090 units sold. Premium pricing of the hatchback could be making its mass market appeal suffer in a value-sensitive market.
Lower Rung: Altroz and Celerio
Tata Altroz saw a sharp 44% decline in sales, recording 2,779 units. Similarly, Maruti Celerio, which ranked last in the top 10, fell by 44%, selling just 1,861 units. Both cars, despite their merits, are finding it hard to keep pace with Swift’s speed.
