New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed new safety regulations for passenger vehicles carrying more than eight passengers. These regulations will apply to buses, trucks, and all large passenger vehicles to enhance road safety. The proposal includes Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS), Driver Drowsiness Alert Warning System (DDAWS), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). According to media reports, the Indian government aims to make vehicles safer by mandating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), aligning with global safety standards. Notably, this proposal comes at a time when the European Union has made ADAS mandatory for all new motor vehicles to improve road safety.
Mandatory Safety Features for Commercial Vehicles
The new safety regulations are expected to take effect from April 2026 for all new large passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks. For existing vehicle models, the new rules will be implemented from October 2026. Additionally, the government may also mandate an onboard blind spot alert system in buses and trucks to improve pedestrian, bicycle, and two-wheeler safety. Initially, these regulations will apply to mini and regular buses, followed by commercial trucks.
How Do These Advanced Safety Systems Work?
Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS): AEBS alerts the driver of a potential collision. If the driver does not respond, the system automatically applies emergency brakes to slow down or stop the vehicle, preventing accidents.
Driver Drowsiness Alert Warning System (DDAWS): DDAWS monitors driver behavior using steering movements, lane position, and facial tracking. If the system detects signs of drowsiness, it issues an audio warning to alert the driver.
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS): This system warns drivers if they unintentionally leave their lane, reducing the risk of road accidents.
