Toyota is known for its strong vehicles, and everyone is aware of the popularity of the Fortuner. Now, news is coming that Toyota is working on a new compact SUV, codenamed Toyota 500D. According to rumors, it can be named the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. A famous car magazine in Japan claims that Toyota will present this powerful model on October 29 at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. This news is special for those who want a smaller and affordable 4×4 vehicle than the Fortuner.

Why is the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ coming

Given the increasing demand for compact SUVs in the automobile market and the slow pace of electric cars, media reports say that Toyota has decided to invest in a new compact SUV for the youth and 4×4-loving customers. This model can be an off-road-oriented alternative to the Toyota Corolla Cross, which will be known for its strong performance. The length of this upcoming SUV can be 4,410 mm, width 1,855 mm, and height 1,870 mm. Its wheelbase is expected to be 2,580 mm.

Strong design and off-road capabilities

Talking about the design, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ can get a glimpse of the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV Concept and the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado). If the company really names it FJ, then it is certain that it will have a thick C-pillar like the FJ Cruiser, which will give it a retro and strong look. It will prove to be a perfect off-roading machine.

This SUV can be offered with a full-time 4WD system with a front-rear torque split of 40:60. It can also get a center-locking differential and a Torsen limited-slip differential at the rear for better traction and stability in off-road conditions.

Powertrain and expected India launch

In Japan and other Asian markets, Toyota is expected to offer the Land Cruiser FJ with 2TR-FE 2.7-litre petrol and 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre diesel engine options. It may get 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options.

The chances of this SUV coming to India are low. According to reports, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is planning to bring a separate SUV below the Fortuner, which will be based on a monocoque platform. If this happens, the chances of the global Land Cruiser FJ coming to India will be reduced. Still, Toyota fans are hopeful that the company will definitely launch this iconic SUV in the Indian market in the future.
