Honda Hybrid: Honda is trying hard to boost its hybrid car lineup in India. Following its experiment with the City e:HEV, Honda now wants to reach more consumers through several new hybrid models. These will be constructed on a new platform and will come in the popular body styles like sedans and SUVs, making them more convenient for Indian families.
Honda City e:HEV Performance
Honda had brought the City e:HEV with a 1.5-litre petrol motor and robust hybrid technology that produced 124 bhp. It also delivered an impressive mileage of 26.5 kmpl. Yet, the City hybrid failed to sell in large volumes due to its hefty starting price of approximately 20.85 lakh rupees (ex-showroom Delhi). Most customers were put off by the price despite the advanced technology.
Future Honda Strong Hybrid Models
Honda is going to introduce new strong hybrid models on the PF2 platform in the near future. The PF2 platform has been developed for accommodating hybrid powertrains with ease. Honda will also benefit from keeping the costs low by utilizing more local parts and systems through it. Honda is going to introduce a next-generation City sedan with a hybrid variant, a new midsize SUV, and a new 7-seater SUV to attract more people to its fold.
Competitive Pricing
These new models will be priced in the range of 15 lakh to 30 lakh rupees. Honda is counting on local manufacturing and local parts to ensure affordable prices. With increasing fuel prices, even more consumers may consider strong hybrids as a wise option to cut down fuel expenses.
Why Hybrids Are Becoming Popular
Since tougher emissions regulations are approaching CAFE standards within the next few years, the demand for tough hybrids will expand rapidly. Honda’s competitors such as Hyundai, Kia, and Skoda-Volkswagen will also introduce their own hybrid variants in India to capitalize on new demand.
Other Brands Entering Hybrid Market
Hyundai will introduce hybrid technology in India through the new-gen Creta by 2027, and Kia will introduce the next Seltos in mid-2026. Skoda-Volkswagen is gearing up hybrid vehicles on a new local platform named IMP21. These vehicles may be introduced in India by 2028.
