New Delhi: The Suzuki Alto is not only a popular car in India but also a fan-favorite in Japan. First introduced on Japanese roads in 1979, the Alto is currently in its 9th generation. Now, Suzuki is gearing up for a major transformation with the 10th-gen Alto, expected to launch in 2026. According to Rushlane, the next-gen model could be 100 kg lighter than the current version, making it one of the lightest cars in its segment.
How Much Will the 10th Gen Alto Weigh?
The Suzuki Alto is widely known for its compact dimensions, affordability, fuel efficiency, and easy maneuverability. The current model weighs between 680 kg and 760 kg, depending on the variant.
However, Suzuki aims to reduce its weight by 100 kg, bringing it down to 580–660 kg. This significant weight reduction will enhance both performance and fuel efficiency.
How Will Suzuki Achieve This Weight Reduction?
Suzuki plans to achieve this by using advanced technology and lightweight ultra-high-strength steel. The next-gen Alto will be based on an upgraded version of the HEARTECT platform, making it lighter yet structurally stronger.
The weight reduction will not be limited to just the chassis. Engine components, wheels, body panels, and linked structures will also be redesigned for maximum efficiency. Additionally, the suspension, braking, and transmission systems will be upgraded to support the lightweight profile.
What Are the Benefits of a Lighter Alto?
A lighter chassis will directly translate into better performance and higher fuel efficiency. The current 9th-gen Suzuki Alto in Japan comes with petrol and mild-hybrid powertrain options. It is powered by a 658cc naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with a CVT gearbox.
With the 10th-gen Alto, Suzuki is expected to enhance these features further, making it an even more efficient and fuel-saving compact car. As Suzuki gears up for the 2026 launch, the Alto is set to remain a top choice for budget-conscious and fuel-efficiency-focused buyers.
