Maruti Jimny: Maruti Suzuki Jimny, the rugged Indian-made SUV, has gone past the 1,02,024 units sold mark since its June 2023 launch. Although Indian consumers have expressed modest interest, international customers are propelling its success as a surprise export bestseller. There is a limited-time Rs.1 lakh cash discount currently offered in India.
Domestic Sales vs Export Surge
Maruti Jimny’s performance highlights the sharp contrast between local and global demand. Out of the total units sold, 26,180 were shipped in India and 75,844 to overseas markets. Remarkably, domestic sales fell by as much as 49% in FY2025 from the previous year, while exports jumped 116%, reflecting the SUV’s increasing popularity overseas.
Global Craze Pushes Wait Time to 3 Years
In spite of sluggish pickups in India, the Jimny has turned into an international rage in countries like Mexico, Australia, South Africa, and Japan. The 5-door variant, which was introduced in Japan as Suzuki Nomad, garnered more than 50,000 pre-bookings in just four days. Demand was so high that Suzuki went on hold with bookings temporarily, with the waiting time extending to three years.
Why Jimny’s Exports Are Booming
Maruti has been exporting the 3-door Jimny from Gurgaon since 2020. But with the launch of the 5-door version in January 2025, export figures went dramatically high. Its overseas foray to Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa was a major milestone in Maruti’s export drive. The Jimny was the second India-assembled SUV supplied to Japan, following the Fronx.
Sales Timeline and Market Response
The Jimny created a stir when it took more than 30,000 bookings ahead of its official launch after Auto Expo 2023. But that early hype didn’t translate into consistent domestic traction. Domestic sales had declined to 431 units by April 2025, though this was 60% more compared to last month. Exports, meanwhile, have recorded steady monthly increments.
Powertrain and Fuel Efficiency
Jimny runs a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. The engine produces 105hp and 134Nm of torque. Customers have the option of a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. The manual returns a fuel efficiency of 16.94 km/l, while the automatic returns 16.39 km/l.
Attractive Pricing and Offer
Priced between Rs.12.76 lakh and Rs.14.81 lakh (ex-showroom), the Jimny is currently available with a special ₹1 lakh cash discount in India. Even with the offer, local buyers seem to be sitting out, perhaps because of market competition and pricing. However, the aggressive international strategy is more than making up for this slack.
