Toyota Innova has been one of India’s most trusted luxury 7-seaters for years. But now, a major shift has happened. Buyers are moving towards its hybrid version — the Innova Hycross. In FY2026 Q1 (April to June 2025), Toyota sold 80,432 cars in India, showing an impressive 18% growth. Interestingly, the top contributor to this success was the Innova, with 25,383 units sold of both its variants — the Crysta and Hycross. However, it’s the hybrid-powered Hycross that has captured a larger share of the market.

Hycross Gets More Buyers Than Crysta

Innova Crysta used to dominate this segment, but recent sales show a clear buyer preference shift. In the past quarter, Crysta’s contribution dropped to just 39%, while Hycross jumped to 61%. The reason is simple — fuel efficiency. Customers looking to save on fuel costs are now opting for the hybrid model instead of diesel-powered Crysta. This change marks a turning point for Toyota’s MPV lineup in India.

Strong Hybrid Tech Makes the Difference

Innova Hycross is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine combined with Toyota’s fifth-generation strong hybrid system. This setup delivers 184 horsepower and 188Nm torque, making it both powerful and fuel-efficient. Another variant with a standard petrol engine and CVT automatic gearbox produces 173 horsepower. With its spacious interiors and premium features, the Hycross is ideal for larger families seeking luxury and economy.

Crysta Mileage Now Falls Behind

The diesel-only Crysta comes with a 2.4-litre engine generating 150 horsepower. While its claimed mileage is 15.10 km/l, real-world mileage often drops to between 9 and 13 km/l. Toyota has reduced the number of Crysta variants due to declining demand, as buyers are leaning more towards the fuel-saving Hycross. Despite its trust factor, Crysta is slowly becoming a secondary option.

Hycross Delivers Better City Mileage

One of the biggest strengths of the Hycross is its hybrid advantage. It runs on electric power around 60% of the time, especially in urban driving conditions. This gives it a practical mileage of 13.1 km/l in the city and up to 16.1 km/l on highways — figures that appeal strongly to modern, fuel-conscious buyers.

Higher Price, But Still the Preferred Choice

Even with a starting price of ₹26.31 lakh and going up to ₹31.34 lakh (ex-showroom), Hycross remains more popular than the lower-priced Crysta, which is priced between ₹19.09 lakh and ₹21.30 lakh. Buyers see value in the advanced hybrid technology, premium feel, and long-term savings. As a result, Hycross is fast becoming the new face of the Innova badge in India.
