As India keeps moving towards cleaner fuel modes, CNG cars are gaining popularity at a very fast rate. For the first time, the sale of CNG versions has surpassed diesel in FY25—a drive based on price, mileage, and green credentials. Now, industry leaders such as Tata, Skoda, and Kia are all set to roll out their new CNG models. Here is the lowdown.

Skoda Kylaq CNG

Skoda’s best-selling car in India, the Kylaq, with almost 5000 monthly sales, is now also being eyed for a CNG conversion. While the launch schedule has not been announced yet, Skoda India Brand Director Ashish Gupta said the Kylaq CNG is on the company’s agenda. Engineers are currently analyzing the viability of modifying its turbo-petrol engine to CNG fuel.

Kylaq’s price will fall in the range of ₹8.25 to ₹13.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and it will become a buyer’s proposition if and when the CNG version becomes available. It comes as part of Skoda’s strategy to introduce lower-priced and more fuel-efficient models with a focus on the Indian market’s changed fuel preferences.

Tata Curvv CNG Almost Ready

Tata Motors, leaders in fuel technology innovation, is going one step further with the Curvv CNG, which was seen testing in Pune not long ago. The car is set to become only the second Indian passenger car to have four fuel options—petrol, diesel, EV, and now CNG—following the Nexon.

Curvv CNG will have Tata’s twin-cylinder technology that gives the boot ample space while returning higher fuel efficiency. This configuration already drives the likes of Nexon, Altroz, and Tiago. Comparison to competitors such as Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder, which still employ the aged single-cylinder setup, comes in.

Expected to roll out sometime around Diwali 2025, the CNG versions of Curvv could be priced ₹1 lakh higher than petrol ones. Tata could also introduce an automatic transmission in addition to the manual one, providing buyers with more choice.

Kia Carens Clavis CNG

Kia India is gearing up to enter the CNG segment with its best-selling MPV, the Carens Clavis. The company has confirmed that this model will be launched by the end of 2025, which will be Kia’s first foray into factory-fitted CNG cars.

Senior Vice President Hardeep Singh Brar stated that Kia is testing the Carens CNG extensively to ensure it meets high standards of performance and efficiency. Once it clears testing, the model will be pitted against Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, which currently dominates the segment.

Kia aims to offer not just an alternative, but a top-tier CNG vehicle that maintains the brand’s premium feel while offering better fuel economy.
