Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Demand for SUVs in India is increasing at a very fast pace, and the current sales data shows the preferences of the market changing. A dramatic turn of events in May 2025 has put a fuel-efficient SUV at the top of the list of popular models like the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio. Let’s briefly examine the highest performing SUVs in India.
Brezza Leads Sales and Mileage
Maruti Suzuki Brezza was the highest-selling SUV in May 2025. The firm sold 15,566 units of Brezza, as against 14,186 units in the corresponding month of last year. This is a 10% increase in sales year-on-year. Its success factor is its achievement of a staggering mileage of up to 25.51 km per kg on CNG, which decisively makes it a more cost-effective option compared to most rivals.
On petrol, the Brezza delivers a fuel efficiency of 17.80 km/l to 19.80 km/l, which is among the best in its segment. Pricewise, the SUV begins at ₹8.69 lakh for the entry-level variant and reaches ₹14.14 lakh (ex-showroom) for the flagship variant. With a mix of affordability and efficiency, it comes as no wonder that Brezza has become the number one.
Hyundai Creta a Strong Contender
Hyundai Creta has continued to be one of the top midsize SUVs in India. In May 2025, the Creta sold 14,860 units, just behind Brezza. It comes equipped with futuristic features like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, Level 2 ADAS, 6 airbags, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen system.
The Creta’s ex-showroom begins at ₹11.11 lakh. Hyundai also has an electric variant of the Creta, which starts from ₹17.99 lakh. Even though it is popular and has premium features, it lagged in mileage compared to the Brezza’s CNG performance.
Mahindra Scorpio Registers Demand
Mahindra Scorpio was third in the May 2025 SUV sales competition with 14,401 units sold. These are both for Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N variants. Compared to 13,717 units for May 2024, Mahindra recorded a 5% year-on-year sales improvement.
Scorpio Classic comes with a diesel motor only, whereas Scorpio N has the option of a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol. In spite of its robust brand equity and tough image, Scorpio failed to overtake Brezza on both fuel efficiency and unit volumes this time.
Fuel Efficiency Makes the Difference
Whereas Creta and Scorpio provide additional luxurious features and powertrain choices, Brezza’s light weight and CNG offering provided it with a definite mileage advantage. With petrol prices being on the move, numerous customers appear to prefer mileage over luxury, and that trend can be seen through the current sales statistics.
