Dev Deepawali 2025: Every year, the festival is celebrated in Varanasi on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. According to legend, Lord Shiva killed a demon named Tripurasura on Kartik Purnima. In joy, the gods and goddesses descended to earth to light lamps and celebrate Diwali.

On Dev Deepawali, you should first bathe and wear clean clothes. Afterwards, light a ghee lamp in your temple during the auspicious time. You can also visit the temples of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and light a lamp. Doing so will bestow the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, and all sorrows will be destroyed.

On Dev Deepawali, lighting lamps in the home’s temple, near the Tulsi plant, in the kitchen, and near water sources is considered highly auspicious. Lighting lamps in the courtyard, in addition to the home’s temple, is also considered highly auspicious. By doing this, positive energy flows into the house and an atmosphere of happiness and peace is maintained.
How many lamps should be lit on Diwali?
On the occasion of Dev Deepawali, an odd number of lamps, such as 5, 7, 11, 21, 51, or 108, can be lit at various places in the house during the Pradosh Kaal Muhurta, depending on your faith. This time, the Pradosh Kaal Muhurta is from 5:15 pm to 7:50 pm. Furthermore, lighting an 8- or 12-faced lamp is considered auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva.
