How much has the price of domestic gas cylinder increased?

In March, the price of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was raised by Rs 60 per cylinder. According to the Indian Oil Corporation, after this latest adjustment, the price of a 14.2-kilogram non-subsidized LPG cylinder—commonly used by households not enrolled in the Ujjwala Yojana—now stands at Rs 913 in Delhi. Additionally, the price of a 5-kilogram “free trade” (FTL) cylinder has also increased by about Rs 261.

There is no shortage of LPG

The government has recently confirmed that there is no current shortage of domestic LPG (cooking gas) in the country. However, due to the ongoing tensions in West Asia, there is some strain on the supply chain. To manage this, several measures have been implemented, such as extending the interval between refill bookings from 21 days to 25 days to deter hoarding. A one-household, one-connection policy has also been enforced. It is now prohibited to have both LPG and PNG (piped gas) connections at the same address. If you possess a PNG connection in your home, you will need to give up the LPG cylinder.

Monthly revision of commercial LPG prices

Commercial LPG cylinder prices are revised monthly. These changes take effect on the first of each month based on international gas prices and foreign exchange rates. However, domestic LPG cylinder prices are determined separately.

This latest increase follows a series of hikes in commercial LPG cylinder prices over the past few months. According to publicly available price data, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi rose to Rs 1,884.50 in March, Rs 2,078.50 in April, and then to Rs 3,071.50 in May.
