Aja Ekadashi 2026: Ekadashi holds special significance in Hinduism. According to the Hindu calendar, the Aja Ekadashi fast is observed on the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
It is a religious belief that observing the Aja Ekadashi fast and performing rituals with devotion helps cleanse a person of their sins. In 2026, the sacred Aja Ekadashi fast falls on Monday, September 7. The prescribed practice involves worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) with a sincere heart throughout the day.
It is believed that for any devotee who observes this fast with true devotion, Shri Hari Vishnu removes all sorrows and suffering from their life forever, ensuring that happiness, peace, and prosperity always prevail in the household. However, while the Ekadashi fast is highly rewarding, its rules are equally strict. Certain actions must be strictly avoided on Ekadashi.
According to the scriptures, even minor mistakes made inadvertently on this day can nullify the spiritual benefits of the entire fast. Let us learn which activities to avoid on Ekadashi.

Do Not Eat Rice
On the day of Ekadashi, rice should neither be cooked in the house nor consumed by any family member. On this day, neither those observing the fast nor those not observing it should consume rice or any rice-based dishes.
Do not pluck Tulsi leaves or offer water
No worship of Lord Vishnu is considered complete without Tulsi; however, plucking Tulsi leaves on the day of Ekadashi is forbidden. Tulsi leaves intended for worship should be plucked and kept ready the day before. Water is also not offered to the Tulsi plant on this day. In Hindu tradition, it is believed that on this day, Mother Tulsi herself observes a *Nirjala* fast (a fast without water) for Lord Vishnu.
Do not eat Tamasic food
No one in the household should eat Tamasic food on Ekadashi. Strictly avoid Tamasic items such as onions, garlic, meat, and alcohol on this day; eat only simple, pure (Sattvic) food.
Worship ritual for Aja Ekadashi
On the day of Aja Ekadashi, wake up early, bathe, meditate on Lord Vishnu, and take a vow to observe the fast. Afterwards, clean the place of worship and install an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu there. Offer yellow garments and yellow flowers to the deity. Then, perform Abhishek (ceremonial bathing) of the Lord using *Gangajal* (holy water from the Ganges). Worship Lord Vishnu according to the prescribed rituals by lighting incense or a lamp. Offerings (Bhog) of fruits, sweets, and other *Sattvic* items can also be made to the Lord.
Chanting Lord Vishnu’s mantra, “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” is considered extremely auspicious. Perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu in the evening. Reading the Aja Ekadashi fast narrative (Vrat Katha) on this day is also considered highly auspicious. Break the fast (*Paran*) on the following day, *Dwadashi Tithi*, after performing the worship rituals.
