Aadhaar Update: How to Change Your Surname After Marriage? Check the New Rules

Aadhaar Name Correction: If your name is misspelled on your Aadhaar card, you want to change your surname after marriage, or you want to change your name completely, this process will now be conducted under new SOP rules. Under the “Standard Operating Procedure” 2026 issued by UIDAI, various documents and affidavits are mandatory for name correction.

This new SOP of UIDAI has come into effect from 18 September 2026. Under this, for name correction in Aadhaar, the applicant will have to submit the prescribed documents, whose authenticity, affidavit and gazette notification will be strictly checked by UIDAI.

What is included in a minor name change?

Minor amendments are classified as minor changes under the rules. These amendments include:

Expanding name abbreviations or initials.

Adding or removing a middle name or last name (surname).

Changing the order of words or names.

Correcting minor spelling mistakes (where pronunciation/sound is similar).

Removing the dot (.) from the middle of the name or correcting mistakes like random capital letters.

For example, if someone’s name is ‘Rama Prasad,’ they can expand it to ‘Rama Shyam Prasad.’ This is not considered a complete identity change.

2. Change of name after marriage or divorce

There are specific rules for changing surname after marriage or modifying name after divorce:

Required Documents: For this, the prescribed affidavit of Annexure D and proof of identity will have to be given.

Condition: This affidavit must clearly state that the change in name is only due to marriage or divorce and does not change the original identity of the person.

3. Spelling mistakes caused by data-entry errors

If you provided correct documents while making or updating Aadhaar, but the name was entered incorrectly due to an operator error (data-entry error):

For adults: For this, affidavit of Annexure B and Proof of Identity (PoI) or Proof of Relationship (PoR) will have to be submitted.

For Minors: Submission of Annexure C affidavit and PoI/PoR is mandatory. If your name is correct in English but is printed incorrectly in the language, it can be corrected by submitting the prescribed affidavit and PoI.

4. Gazette notification for complete name change

If you are changing your name completely or making a change that alters your previous identity, it will be considered a Major Name Change.

A government gazette notification is mandatory for name changes in this category. A full name change cannot be made without a gazette notification. UIDAI is no longer offering the online name correction facility. Applicants must visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrollment/Update Center for any name correction.
