PF Status: Employees frequently overlook their old PF accounts after switching jobs. Occasionally, a small sum remains in these accounts, yet no one claims it for years. Recently, a significant update has surfaced regarding such dormant accounts. The EPFO has decided to start the process of refunding small amounts held in these accounts. This initiative, prompted by the Union Labor Ministry’s directives, is anticipated to benefit millions of account holders.
Notably, for accounts with very low balances, account holders will not be required to submit a separate application for a refund. The funds will be directly transferred to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Now, let’s clarify which bank accounts will receive the money deposited in their PF accounts and how to check their status.
In which accounts will the money be deposited?
Approximately 3.1 million PF accounts nationwide have been identified as inactive for an extended period. Out of these, around 600,000 accounts have balances of Rs 1,000 or less. These accounts will be prioritized for refunds. If your old account has remained unused for several years and has a balance below Rs 1,000, the amount will be directly transferred to your Aadhaar-linked bank account. Please note that funds will only be transferred to accounts where the bank account and Aadhaar details are updated and linked.
What constitutes an inactive PF account?
A PF account is deemed inoperative if it has not received any payments or withdrawals for three consecutive years. However, such an account is not permanently closed. When starting a new job, the old UAN can be reactivated by linking it to the new employer. There are also ongoing complaints that some companies deduct PF from employees’ salaries but fail to deposit it promptly. To enhance monitoring, the EPFO is connecting its database with the government procurement portal GeM, the GST department, and other agencies. This will facilitate the identification of companies that are not adhering to the regulations.
How to check your status?
- If your account is inactive and you want to check the balance in your account under this government initiative, then you can check the balance by logging in to the EPFO portal.
- Apart from this, you also get information through the View Passbook option through the UMANG app.
