8th Pay Commission: Assam has taken the initiative regarding the 8th Pay Commission and has given good news to about seven lakh employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the 8th Pay Commission on January 1, 2026, and now it has also been constituted. By constituting the 8th Pay Commission in Assam, it has become the first state.
The objective of the Commission is to comprehensively review the pay structure, allowances and service conditions of the state government employees. Officers of All India Services and employees falling under some technical pay scales have been excluded from it. This Commission has been entrusted with the task of examining the principles governing the structure of pay scales and service conditions of the state government employees.
Subhash Chandra Das will be the president
According to a report, Subhas Chandra Das will be the chairman of the 8th Assam Pay Commission 2026. According to a notification issued by the Finance Department, the Secretary of the Finance Department will serve as the Member Secretary of the Commission. Other members include the senior-most secretaries of the Personnel Department, ARTPPC Department, and Finance Department; the LR-cum-Commissioner and Special Secretary of the Judicial Department; the Special Director of the Finance (Budget) Department or the nominee of the senior-most secretary of the Finance Department; and Ratul Mahanta, a professor at Gauhati University.
Officers of All India Services, employees of technical institutions under UGC/AICTE in degree colleges, engineering colleges, medical colleges, nursing colleges, Ayurvedic colleges, pharmacy institutes, polytechnics and other notified institutions and judicial service officers will be out of its purview.
The commission will submit its report within 12 months
The commission will consider the state’s economic situation, fiscal discipline, developmental priorities, and the recommendations of the Central Pay Commission. It will be headquartered in Guwahati and is required to submit its report within 12 months. The government has placed special emphasis on digital technology, human resource reforms, performance-based governance, and productivity enhancement in addition to the pay revision. The government stated that a comprehensive review of pay structures is necessary, and pointed out that the last revisions were implemented on April 1, 2016, following the recommendations of the 7th Assam Pay Commission.
