Boarding Station Rule: Indian Railways is taking a revolutionary step to make its passengers’ journeys comfortable and flexible. According to the Railway Board’s new proposal, passengers will now be able to change their boarding station even just minutes before the train’s departure. This news brings a sigh of relief to millions of passengers who had to change their boarding point at the last minute due to an emergency or traffic congestion.
Until now, this facility was only available several hours before the chart preparation, but now, with the advancement of technology, the Railways are preparing to transform this entire process. In this article, we will explore in detail how this new proposal will work and the significant benefits it will bring to you.
Freedom to Change Station Until the Second Chart is Prepared

This is considered a historic decision towards making the Indian Railways system more passenger-friendly, as according to the Railway Board’s proposal, passengers will now be able to change their boarding station until the second reservation chart is prepared. Typically, the second chart is prepared approximately 30 minutes before the train departs, meaning that if you wish to board a train from a different station at the last minute, you will be able to update it digitally without any legal hassles.
Why was this change needed
Under the old rules, boarding point changes were only possible until the first chart was prepared, and for long-distance trains, the first chart is prepared 8 to 20 hours before the train’s departure. In such a situation, if a passenger needed to board a train from a different station within the city at the last minute, they had no legal recourse.
If they boarded from another station without changing their boarding point, the TTE could assign their seat to someone else or face a hefty fine. This new rule will completely eliminate this “last-minute tension” for passengers.
When will it be implemented

Railway Board Director Sanjay Manocha wrote to CRIS on February 19, 2026, seeking a report on the technical feasibility of this proposal. Railway management is working on a software update to understand the impact this change will have on the reservation software and servers. If the technical report is positive, this feature will first be piloted on trains on selected routes, and upon its success, it will be implemented on all mail and express trains across the country.
Major Benefits to Passengers
This new railway update will provide several direct benefits to passengers, the most significant of which is that your seat will remain secure even if your plans change suddenly. Passengers often find themselves stuck in traffic and cannot reach the main station.
Now, they can quickly select the next station’s boarding point, eliminating the fear of penalties for boarding from another station without changing the boarding point. This entire process can be completed quickly through the IRCTC app and website, eliminating the need for passengers to visit counters and ensuring a stress-free journey.
