Although there is an abundance of various types of vegetables and fruits in the marginal rural areas of Jangalmahal, they often go to waste due to lack of proper utilization and marketing. IIT Kharagpur came forward to find a solution to that problem. An innovative training initiative has been taken in the Taldanga area of Keshiari block of Paschim Medinipur to make rural women of the backward classes self-reliant.
Organized in collaboration with the Food Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur and the Keshiari Block Krishikanti Farmers Producer Company, this workshop teaches hands-on techniques for making various types of jams, jellies and squashes. Practical training is provided on how to make pickles and preserved food items not only from fruits, but also from locally grown vegetables and mushrooms. The trainers also teach simple ways to process, preserve and package food in a scientific manner.
The main objective of this camp was to show new ways to earn income to the women of the area. In addition to making high-quality food products from mango, lemon, papaya or various vegetables, they are also taught how to dry and preserve excess grains for a long time. As a result, seasonal fruits and vegetables will no longer be wasted, but will instead become a source of income.
More than twenty Scheduled Caste and Tribal women participated in this training. In this remote village of Jangalmahal, enthusiasm is evident around such an initiative. At the end of the training, certificates were handed over to the participants, which will be helpful in setting up small enterprises in the future.
According to the entrepreneurs, if women can easily become self-reliant by making such food products at home and selling them in the local market or through self-help groups, this initiative of IIT has not only provided technical support, but also given confidence to the women of the village. This effort has undoubtedly opened a new horizon of self-reliance in the land of Jangalmahal.
