How experts view the BNP’s landslide victory
Political analysts attribute the BNP’s landslide victory in Bangladesh’s general elections to inclusive support. The fundamentalist party Jamaat-e-Islami suffered a crushing defeat in this election, winning only 70 seats. The National Citizen Party (NCP), the student party that ousted Sheikh Hasina from the prime minister’s post, also suffered a disastrous defeat.
The public completely rejected it. Political analysts claim that Tarique Rahman’s landslide victory was due to a large faction of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, shifting to the BNP.
Furthermore, the BNP also achieved a landslide victory in Hindu-majority areas across Bangladesh. In addition to Gopalganj, the Awami League’s stronghold, it won Khulna, Sylhet, Chittagong, and Thakurganj. Jamaat’s past came to the fore, as people remembered its opposition to Bangladesh’s liberation struggle. Jamaat has been unable to wash away this stigma.
