On Saturday (January 17), the Delhi government made a significant move to enhance the food security system by raising the income limit for ration cards to Rs 1.20 lakh per year. This change will enable more families in need to qualify for affordable rations under the Public Distribution System (PDS). Previously, the maximum income limit for a ration card was Rs 1 lakh per year.
Who is eligible for a ration card?
In Delhi, ration cards are only issued to individuals who meet the government’s eligibility criteria.
The applicant must be a permanent or current resident of Delhi.
There shouldn’t be any other ration card registered in the family’s name.
All family members must possess an Aadhar card.
The type of ration card is determined by income and social status.
There are primarily 3 types of ration cards available in Delhi:
1. Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) – designated for extremely poor families
2. Priority Household (PHH) Ration Card
3. Non-Priority (Non-PHH) Ration Card
Documents needed for a ration card:
– Aadhaar card for all family members
– Proof of residence in Delhi (like an electricity bill, water bill, or rent agreement)
– Passport-sized photo
– Mobile number
– Bank account details (if applicable)
Step-by-Step Online Application Process
Step 1: Start by visiting the Delhi Government website at https://nfs.delhi.gov.in/.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Apply Online for Food Security’ option found in the Citizen’s Corner.
Step 3: Enter your mobile number and log in or register using the OTP.
Step 4: After you submit the form, you will receive an application number. which you can track the status of the application.
