In this regard, a surgeon of Kolkata Police said that crossing the road with a mobile phone is not a work habit. Due to this, major accidents can happen. That is why a fine is imposed.
He also informed that this fine is imposed under the Kolkata Police Act. It has nothing to do with the Motor Vehicle Act.

He also explained why this is done. The surgeon said that actually walking with a phone in your ear is not a violation of any law directly related to vehicles. Therefore, it does not fall under the Motor Vehicle Act. A fine is imposed under the Kolkata Police Act.
Fines are levied at specific places

The surgeon said that on all the roads in Kolkata where this fine is imposed, there are specific signs. This sign is called the ‘Jaywalking’ sign. And this fine is called a Jaywalking fine.
