Income Tax Refund: If you haven’t received your income tax refund yet, this news is for you. The Income Tax Department has sent emails and SMS messages to some suspicious taxpayers asking them to re-file their ITRs. These taxpayers have been asked to correct any errors and submit revised returns by December 31, 2025.
Taxpayers who have received a notice from the Income Tax Department or who have made any errors or omissions in their original ITR filing must file a revised ITR. You can file a revised income tax return for assessment year 2025-26 by the deadline of December 31, 2025, especially in cases where errors or incomplete information have resulted in incorrect refund claims or data mismatches.

Failure to do so may delay the receipt of income tax refunds. A revised ITR is filed to correct any errors in the original ITR. These errors may include omissions, understatement of income, excess deductions, choosing the wrong ITR form, claiming more or less than the eligible refund, etc.
If taxpayers who have been asked to file a revised ITR do not do so by December 31st, they will need to file an updated ITR to make changes to their ITR for AY26. However, this could result in a penalty of up to Rs 5,000. Once your ITR submission is confirmed, the Income Tax Department typically begins processing refunds, which are typically credited within 4-5 weeks.

How to Check ITR Refund Status?
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Portal at eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/.
Step 2: Log in to your account with your user ID and password.

Step 3: Select the ‘e-File’ tab, click on ‘Income Tax Returns’ and then click on ‘View Filed Returns’.
Step 4: The status of your current and previous income tax returns will be displayed on the screen.
