New Delhi: The installation of smart meters is progressing rapidly in Uttar Pradesh. The smart metering process is facing widespread public opposition. Amid widespread protests, it has now become mandatory for all electricity employees to install smart meters at their homes. Smart meters will soon be installed at all employees’ residences.

The Electricity Corporation has assigned the responsibility of installing smart meters to junior meter managers. They have also been provided with a list of retired and active electricity employees living in their area. They have been instructed to complete the installation process by December 31, 2025. If the target is not met by this date, the JMT will be suspended. Chairman Dr Ashish Goyal has made a significant statement. You can read what he said below.

What did the Chairman say?

Chairman Dr Ashish Goyal has issued surprising instructions regarding smart meters. He also directed the installation of smart meters at the residences of electricity employees to monitor electricity consumption. As soon as the metering began, protests erupted across the state. The meter installation work stalled once again.

Now, once again, instructions have been issued to install meters. This time, according to a list, meters have been installed at all employee residences. Meanwhile, electricity employees claim that management is doing this to increase fixed charges. This is a step towards privatisation. Subsequently, junior engineers may have to pay electricity bills exceeding ₹5,000 per month.

Government Instructions for Action on Obstruction

According to electricity corporation engineers, retired or current electricity employees who oppose the smart meter installation process may face an FIR for obstructing government work. Furthermore, obstruction or misbehaviour with a JMT or other engineer could lead to legal action.
