Tata Motors has finally completed preparations to bring petrol engine to its two most popular SUVs, Tta Harrier and Tata Safari. After long-standing speculation and testing, the company has decided to take this big step. Until now both SUVs were only available in diesel engine, but in December 2025 both of these will launch with the new Hyperion turbo petrol engine. So let’s know the whole details.

Engine
The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection Hyperion turbo petrol engine found in the new Harrier and Safari is part of the new engine family of Tata Motors. This engine will produce a power of about 168 PS and a torque of 280 Nm. Not only this, this power output makes these SUVs equal to the rest of the cars in its segment such as the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector.
This engine was first showcased at Auto Expo 2023, where it received considerable praise. Since then, there has been much discussion about its market launch, but now the company has finally set a date for December 9, 2025.
Performance
The new Hyperion Turbo GDI engine is specifically designed for those who want a little “fun power ” in driving. This engine gives superb mid-range performance between 2000–3500 rpm. That is, this engine will be smooth and responsive on city driving as well as on the highway.
Tata can offer this engine with both manual and automatic transmission options. Although the company has not yet revealed which automatic gearbox will be used, it is expected that it may receive a 6-speed torque converter or dual-clutch automatic.
Diesel Engine
Let me tell you that Harrier and Safari already come with 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, sourced from FCA. Tata has the right to modify this engine, and it is possible to see its updated version in the future.

The same petrol engine will be priced slightly less than diesel variants. This means that now Tata Harrier and Safari will reach customers with more budget-friendly and versatile options than before.
