Kia India has introduced a new CNG version of its popular 7-seater MPV, the Carens, in the Indian market. This is the company’s first CNG car, specifically designed for customers with large families who want low running costs. The new Kia Carens CNG is available only in the Premium (O) variant and will be installed as a dealer-level fitment. Customers will have to pay ₹77,900 more than the petrol model’s price, totaling ₹10.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Carens CNG Engine and Performance

The new Carens CNG is powered by the same 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine as the standard petrol model. This engine produces 115 hp in petrol mode, while its power output will be slightly lower in CNG mode. It is equipped with a CNG kit from Italy’s Lovato brand, which comes with a third-party warranty of 3 years or 100,000 kilometers. Since this is not a factory-fitted kit, the company has not yet shared its official mileage and performance figures.

Kia Carens CNG Features

This CNG kit is only available for the Premium (O) variant. This variant comes with features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), roof-mounted second and third-row AC vents, one-touch electric tumble seats for the second row, semi-leatherette upholstery, keyless entry, electric ORVMs, a shark fin antenna, and a rear-view camera.

Although boot space may be slightly reduced to 216 liters after the CNG cylinder is installed, seating space will not be affected.

Kia Carens CNG Safety Features

The Kia Carens CNG is also completely reliable in terms of safety. It comes standard with features like six airbags, ABS, EBD, traction control, vehicle stability management, downhill brake control, all-wheel disc brakes, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX mounts, and rear parking sensors.

The Kia Carens has received a 3-star safety rating in the Global NCAP test, making it one of the safest MPVs in its segment.

Kia Carens and Carens Clavis: Two Different Models

Kia India currently sells two different models – the old Kia Carens and its updated version, the Carens Clavis. The company states that the old Carens is now primarily focused on fleet operators and taxi services, while the new CNG variant makes it more affordable. The Carens Clavis, on the other hand, is designed for more premium customers and offers multiple engine and transmission options.

Other Dealer-Level CNG Cars

The Kia Carens CNG now joins the select list of models offering a dealer-level CNG kit option. This list also includes cars like the Honda City, Amaze, Elevate, Renault Kwid, Triber, Kiger, Citroen C3, C3 Aircross, and Nissan Magnite. This trend indicates that car manufacturers are now embracing CNG as a strong alternative to petrol and diesel.
