ITR Refund Delay: The last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for assessment year 2025-26 was September 16th. Taxpayers complained of various technical issues and problems, but the Income Tax Department did not extend the deadline. A large number of returns were filed this year, but many taxpayers are facing difficulties receiving refunds.
As of September 16, the Income Tax Department’s website showed that more than 75.3 million ITRs had been filed. Of these, more than 40 million had been processed. Subsequently, approximately 1.5 million more ITRs were filed. By September 5, a total of 76.8 million returns had been filed, and approximately 61.1 million ITRs had been processed.
Despite this, a large number of taxpayers are complaining on social media that the status of their ITR is showing ‘Processed’ on the portal, but the refund has not yet been credited to their bank account.
What to do if the refund has not arrived?
First of all login to the e-filing portal and check the Refund/Demand Status.
If the refund has been processed but has not been credited to the bank account, see the next step.
Make sure you have entered the correct bank account number and IFSC code.
Refunds often get stuck due to incorrect information.
Match the TDS and tax credit details given in Form 26AS and your ITR.
Sometimes the refund gets delayed due to difference between the two.
If the bank details are correct, you can place a ‘Refund Reissue’ request through the helpdesk on the portal.
If the RFD code has been issued and the money hasn’t yet been credited to your account, contact the relevant bank or NSDL. Note that it may take 15-30 days for the refund to be credited to your bank account after processing.
ITR filing process in non-audit cases
In non-audit cases, most taxpayers file their ITR based on their salary, bank interest, or other income. This requires entering all your details (income, deductions, TDS, etc.) on the e-filing portal. The Income Tax Department then verifies these details, processes the return, and issues a refund.
