The Supreme Court of Nepal requested last week, on August 28, that social media companies register to do company in the nation. The government has chosen to outlaw websites like Facebook and YouTube since they failed to register even beyond the deadline.
All unregistered social media platforms in Nepal will be prohibited, according to a public notice released by the country’s Ministry of Communication and Technology. said Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur, who shared the information about the social media platform ban, the government took this stringent action after expecting the social media sites to contact him by Wednesday, September 3.

In line with the Supreme Court’s directives, the Nepal Telecom Authority has chosen to outlaw all of these social media sites. In line with the guidelines of the Directive on the use and control of social media 2023, the Supreme Court there last week ordered all domestic and international social media platforms to register by September 3. The Supreme Court issued this order to keep an eye on objectionable content posted on social networking sites.
In reference to international social media sites, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn failed to register themselves in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision until Wednesday, September 3, at midnight. While Telegram and Global Diary have applied for registration but have not yet been approved, TikTok, Nibuzz, Viber, Witk, and Popo Live are already listed.
Aside from these five listed and two applied platforms, all of them have been banned in Nepal, according to the Kathmandu Post article. As to government spokesperson Gajendra Kumar Thakur, the prohibition would be lifted the same day that any other social media platform registers.
