There is some big news for railway passengers. Indian Railways is soon going to make the rules of luggage strict like those on airplanes. Now you will not be allowed to carry more than the prescribed limit on your journey. This step is a big relief for those passengers who travel with less luggage. Let’s know what are these new rules and how they will affect you.
What is the new luggage rule of railways
Keeping in mind the convenience of the passengers, Indian Railways is going to take a big step. Now your luggage will be weighed by electronic machines at major railway stations. If your luggage exceeds the prescribed limit, then you will have to pay an additional fee. The purpose of this rule is to reduce the crowd in trains and give passengers a comfortable and convenient travel experience. This rule is specially made for long-distance trains, where passengers face a lot of trouble due to luggage.

How much luggage can be carried in which class
Indian Railways has already fixed the limit of carrying luggage for each class, but now it will be strictly implemented. The limit set for each class is as follows:
- In First Class AC, you can carry up to 70 kg of luggage.
- In Second Class AC, the limit is 50 kg.
- For Third Class AC and Sleeper Class, you can carry a maximum of 40 kg of luggage.
- General class passengers are allowed to carry up to 35 kg of luggage.
Also, if your bag is larger than the prescribed size and occupies more space, then a fine can be levied on it, irrespective of its weight.
What will be the extra charge for excess luggage
If your luggage is found to be more than the prescribed limit, you will have to pay an extra charge. This rule can pose a challenge for those who often travel with a lot of luggage. On one hand, this rule will be better for those passengers who travel with less luggage, as they will get more space and comfort in the train. On the other hand, those with more luggage will either have to reduce the luggage or pay extra money.

Initially, the rule will be implemented at these stations
Himanshu Shukla, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of North Central Railway (NCR), said that this rule will start from the major stations of NCR. These include stations like Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah.
The luggage of the passengers will be weighed at these stations, and only passengers with luggage within the prescribed limit will be allowed to enter the station. This step is a great initiative towards making railway travel even better and organized.
