New Delhi: Tata Nano has been a popular choice in the Indian market, with smaller variants attracting a lot of buyers. The powerhouse auto major is all set to rely on Toyota’s IMV 0 ladder-frame platform to make the Land Cruiser FJ the newest addition to the brand’s global off-road portfolio when it arrives.

Instead of topping the lineup, it will sit at the lower end of Toyota’s rugged SUV hierarchy. According to reports, mass production is expected to begin globally in the second quarter of next year. Patent sketches have revealed how the Land Cruiser FJ is shaping up for series production, with styling that is a bit too slick.

Cruiser FJ Features

The Cruiser FJ is quite distinctive in its styling, mirroring the previews closely. An upright nose, chunky arches and a slab-like roofline are likely to dominate the proportions. It is likely to be positioned as a step below the Fortuner in Toyota’s SUV stable.

The Cruiser FJ will rely heavily on retro-inspired touches taken from its classic predecessors. Towards the top of the range, the familiar 2.8-litre GD mild hybrid engine could be included. It is already being used in other ladder-frame models. It will be equipped with modern features. Apart from this, the Land Cruiser FJ is also likely to have a permanent four-wheel-drive system. The leaked patent visuals seem to point to a strong set with boxy lighting elements. It can also add square headlamps with C-shaped DRLs at the front, and block-like tail lamps surrounded by chunky cladding at the rear.

Anyway, the vertical panels give the SUV a strong stance, while under the hood, Toyota is preparing several engine options to suit the needs of different regions. At the same time, for the Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota is also considering petrol engine options. This appears to point to 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre four-cylinder units.
