RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that he never claimed that UPI would always be free. According to him, someone will have to bear the expenses, because right now the government is giving a subsidy to operate such a payment service.

RBI Governor’s big hints

In a press conference, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, “Who will bear the cost of UPI is important. But more important than that is that people keep making digital payments.” He also added that if the UPI model has to be made sustainable for a long time, then it has to be decided who will bear that cost – the government, the bank or the user?

This statement of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has many meanings, due to which the crores of UPI transactions happening every day in the country are not going to be free. According to the RBI Governor, at present, the government is bearing the cost of operating UPI. Here, the service banks or app providers are not running it at their own expense. In such a situation, the RBI Governor says that this system cannot last for a long time.

UPI transactions are growing rapidly

UPI has revolutionised digital transactions in India. In the month of June this year, 2025, 18.4 billion transactions have been done through UPI. That is, transactions worth thousands of crores are happening every month. According to the data released by the government, there is an increase of 32% compared to last year, 2024.

Most of the people in the country now have app-based smartphones, due to which there is no problem in taking advantage of such digital services, which can be easily accessed through UPI.
