Saturday Bank Holiday– The culture of 5 day week i.e. working only five days a week is being adopted in many sectors nowadays. In such a situation, this question is now being raised about banks. Will there be a holiday in banks every Saturday now? Will banks work only from Monday to Friday in the coming time? This question is being discussed among common people as well as bank employees.
At present, government banks remain closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Banks remain open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays. But now the proposal to have a holiday on every Saturday has reached the government.
Bank unions put forward proposal to the government
The Finance Ministry, while giving a written reply to a question asked on this issue in the Lok Sabha, said that it has received a proposal from the organizations of bank employees and officers that banks should be closed on all Saturdays. All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) and Indian Banks Association (IBA) have jointly sent this proposal to the government. These organizations say that this will further improve the working capacity and working environment of bank employees.
The MP raised the issue, the government gave this answer
MP KC Venugopal asked several questions related to this proposal in Parliament. He asked whether the government is considering the proposal to close banks every Saturday? Is staff shortage the reason for this? And if the proposal is approved, what will be the timeline for implementing it?
According to the data till March 31, 2025, 96% of the posts in government banks have been filled with employees. There is a slight decrease in this due to normal retirement and sudden resignations. The government also clarified that government banks work through their boards and recruit staff according to their needs. This decision is taken on the basis of the need of the bank, area of work, retirement and other circumstances.
This means that it is clear that the government has a proposal to declare banks closed every Saturday and it is being considered. However, no final decision has been taken on this yet. In such a situation, both bank employees and common people will be waiting for the government’s decision on this issue in the coming time.
