Paying traffic challans no longer requires a court visit. With the introduction of the Virtual Court portal, clearing fines has become fast, simple, and hassle-free. Whether your challan is new or already transferred to court, it can now be paid online from the comfort of your home—saving both time and stress.
What Is Virtual Court?
Virtual Court is part of the Indian government’s e-Courts project. It’s an online platform created to digitalize the justice system. Through this portal, users can check the status of their traffic challans, pay fines, or even contest a challan — all without needing to physically go to court. It ensures a smooth process for citizens while reducing courtroom crowding.
When Does Challan Go to Court?
If you’ve received a challan—either directly from a traffic officer or as an e-challan on your mobile—it must be paid within 60 days. If it remains unpaid after that, the case is automatically forwarded to the Virtual Court. But if it’s still not cleared within 90 days, the matter can escalate to a physical court, and you might have to appear in person.
How to Pay Challan Online via Virtual Court
To pay your challan through the Virtual Court, visit https://vcourts.gov.in. Select the state where your vehicle is registered. You can search for your challan using mobile number, vehicle number, challan number, or CNR number.
After that, enter the security captcha and verify using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Once logged in, you can click the ‘View’ button to check your challan details, fine amount, and date.
Click on “I wish to pay the proposed fine,” then proceed to payment. You can pay using net banking, UPI, or credit/debit card. After successful payment, a digital receipt will be generated. You can download it immediately or log in again later to access it.
What If Challan Isn’t Paid for 90 Days?
If a challan is not paid within 90 days, the case is transferred to the district court. In such situations, legal action may be initiated, and the vehicle owner might be summoned. This can involve physical appearance in court and further complications. To avoid this, it’s advised to pay fines promptly through the virtual portal.
