Huawei Tri-Fold Phone: Huawei’s second-generation triple-folding phone is inching closer to its official debut. The device has now started appearing on certification platforms, with a new listing spotted on China’s MIIT database. This suggests that the upcoming foldable could launch soon, possibly under the name Mate XT 2, as it follows the original Mate XT’s model pattern. The listed model number is GRL-AL20, closely related to the previous GRL-AL10 of the first-generation tri-fold.

MIIT Listing Confirms 5G and Satellite Features

The new listing also shows that the Huawei tri-fold will be compatible with 5G networks, in addition to satellite communication. Like the Mate X5 and Mate XT variants, the new device may provide Tiantong satellite calling, further improving connectivity in areas far from major cities. Previous phones would activate satellite functionality only when completely unfolded, but it is still unknown whether the new model will allow satellite functionality even when the device is partially folded or closed.

Display and Hinge Set to Continue Tradition

Leaked data indicates that Huawei will inherit its ancestor’s 10.2-inch triple-folding display. With its extensive screen, it creates a tablet experience when completely unfolded. The foldable will probably continue using the firm’s “Tian Gong” hinge technology, with a thinner, but equally resilient frame, made for better long-term dependability and smooth unfolding mechanisms.

Performance Improved with Kirin 9020 Chipset

Under the hood, the Mate XT 2 is expected to be powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9020 chipset. The rumored configuration includes a 1+3+4 CPU setup featuring a 2.5GHz prime Taishan core, three 2.15GHz performance cores, and four 1.6GHz efficiency cores. On the graphics side, the phone may use a Maleoon 920 GPU clocked at 840MHz, which should be enough to handle multitasking and media-heavy workflows on the large foldable screen.

eSIM and Future-Oriented Connectivity on the Horizon

In another direction toward the future, Huawei could abandon the physical SIM tray in its entirety for eSIM-only connectivity in the Mate XT 2. This would simplify the internal design and possibly create space for other hardware, such as the satellite antenna or even a larger battery, and also follow emerging trends in smartphone minimalism.

Launch Planned for September Alongside the Big Guns

Huawei is likely to announce the Mate XT 2 around September, coinciding with major industry launches like Apple’s iPhone 17 series and Samsung’s rumored tri-fold entry. With competition heating up in the foldable space, Huawei’s next tri-fold might not just stand out for its form factor, but also for its satellite features and proprietary hardware innovations.
