FASTag: The government has now tightened rules around FASTag usage at toll plazas. A simple mistake like holding the tag in your hand can now cost you double toll or even blacklisting. NHAI has implemented strict guidelines to ensure smooth toll collection and prevent misuse of the system.
FASTag Must Be Properly Stuck on Windshield
As per the new NHAI rules, it is now mandatory to stick FASTag properly on your vehicle’s front windshield. If a vehicle owner holds the FASTag in hand instead of placing it on the glass, the toll booth scanner may not read it correctly. This can lead to double toll deduction or transaction failure.
Blacklisting for Wrong FASTag Usage
Drivers who try to avoid sticking the tag and instead show it in hand can now face blacklisting. Once reported by the toll agency, their FASTag will be blocked or added to a ‘hotlist’. This means the FASTag will no longer work, and the vehicle will not be allowed to pass through FASTag lanes without paying extra charges.
Government’s Strict Action at Toll Plazas
NHAI has instructed all toll agencies to immediately report any vehicles with loosely attached or hand-held FASTags. A dedicated email has been provided to send such reports. Upon receiving the complaint, NHAI will block the FASTag without delay, making it unusable until reactivation is done manually by the user.
Digital Tolling Push Will Help Reduce Traffic
This move is part of a wider effort to promote digital toll collection and reduce traffic congestion. A correctly installed FASTag ensures faster scanning, avoids duplicate deductions, and helps maintain smooth vehicle flow at toll points. This smart change aims to save time and improve the accuracy of digital tolling.

No Room for Carelessness Anymore
Vehicle owners must now take responsibility to check the position and validity of their FASTag regularly. If your tag is wrongly placed or expired, you might not only face delays but also penalties or blacklisting. The new system aims to make toll payments more transparent and hassle-free for everyone.
