Tata Harrier EV: Tata Motors has generated a buzz by launching its long-awaited Harrier EV. One of the key highlights is four-wheel drive coming back with a new bold avatar—QWD. This new technology will redefine the game for the electric SUV segment in India. Tata feels that this variant alone can account for 20% of Harrier EV’s overall sales.

New Interior Highlights with QWD

The Harrier EV signals the comeback of 4WD in Tata’s portfolio but electric and refined. The QWD—Quad Wheel Drive—is with two motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear. The configuration provides great power to all four wheels and improves both the performance and control when driving in challenging terrain. QWD is not only a feature, it’s a whole branding strategy for the upcoming Tata AWD models.

Tata previously introduced 4WD in models such as Safari Storme, but never before have such capability been introduced in an electric SUV. The return of 4WD in the form of QWD in Harrier EV makes it a benchmark among electric SUVs.

Important Features of Tata Harrier EV QWD

  • Dual electric motor configuration for superior 4WD performance
  • 75kWh larger battery for increased range and power
  • Quicker torque delivery and improved motor response compared to ICE SUVs
  • Superb off-road and on-road dynamics
  • Will possibly become pricier than the base 65kWh variant
  • Tata will apply QWD branding to all upcoming AWD products

Why 4WD Will Matter More in EVs

As opposed to petrol and diesel SUVs where only around 1–5% of buyers go for 4WD, Tata is planning that at least 20% of Harrier EV customers will opt for the QWD model. As Vivek Srivastava, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata’s Passenger Electric Division, explains, this is because QWD performs much better. It’s faster, more responsive, and not only suitable for rugged terrain but also highways and city roads.

A New Brand Under a Brand

Tata intends to use QWD as a distinctive identifier for its future all-wheel drive electric cars. Just as Suzuki does with the AllGrip brand with variations, Tata can differently layer QWD across different models. This would not only emphasize off-road prowess but also underscore on-road comfort and handling.

Pricing Still Under Wraps

As of now, only the 65kWh Harrier EV’s price is revealed, from Rs.21.49 lakh. The QWD version of the 75kWh model is likely to be priced higher, but it will target a particular customer segment seeking maximum performance across all seasons and road conditions.
