If you do not pay attention to the fact that your PAN card has been deactivated, and you are still using it, then you are inviting trouble. You can be fined a heavy fine of up to ₹ 10,000 by the Income Tax Department. People whose PAN cards have been deactivated but who are using them are being fined by the Income Tax Department. You need to know whether your PAN card is active or not.
Why does a PAN card become inactive
There can be many reasons for a PAN card becoming inactive, the most common of which is:

The government has made it mandatory to link the PAN card with the Aadhaar card. If you have not linked your PAN with Aadhaar by the stipulated time limit, then your PAN card may become inactive.
If a person has more than one PAN card (which is illegal), then the other PAN cards are deactivated.
PAN can also become inactive if wrong or incomplete information is given in the PAN application.
Although it is less common, in some cases PAN can also become inactive due to not using it for a long time.
How to know if your PAN card is active or not
If your PAN card has become inactive, then you will have to get it activated again. For this, you have to complete the whole process. You can also find out whether your PAN card is active or not while sitting at home. For this, you have to follow the following steps:
First of all, you have to go to the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
On the homepage of the website, you will find the option of ‘Verify PAN Status’ in the ‘Quick Links’ section, click on it.
Here you have to enter your full name, date of birth (DOB), and the registered mobile number linked to your PAN.
After this, you will receive an OTP (Time Password). You have to enter it.
As soon as you enter the OTP, you will see the status of whether your PAN is active or not.
What to do if your PAN card is showing inactive

If your PAN card is showing inactive, then you should immediately check whether your PAN card is linked to your Aadhaar or not. If your PAN card is not linked to your Aadhaar, then get it linked to Aadhaar immediately. Because a PAN card becomes inactive even if it is not linked to Aadhaar.
Process of linking PAN to Aadhaar:
Go to the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department.
Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option in ‘Quick Links’.
Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and your name written on the Aadhaar card.
Enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number.
Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
If your PAN is already linked to Aadhaar and is still showing inactive, then you should contact the Income Tax Department or get the help of a tax consultant.
